About this tool

What the Retirement Expenses Worksheet actually does.

Our Retirement Expenses Worksheet helps you estimate what you'll actually spend each year in retirement, category by category. Most retirement plans fail because the person guessed at a lifestyle number — this tool forces you to build it up line by line.

Once you have the annual number, everything else clicks into place: the required nest egg (25× the annual figure is a common target), the monthly contribution to get there, and the realistic retirement date.

Frequently asked

Common questions about this tool.

Do expenses go up or down in retirement?

+

Usually a mix. Commute, work clothes, and retirement contributions drop. Healthcare, travel, and hobbies often rise. Most retirees end up spending about 70–80% of their pre-retirement income, but it varies widely.

How much should I budget for healthcare?

+

Fidelity's annual estimate is around $165K in total healthcare costs for a 65-year-old couple through retirement. Budget at least $6K–$10K/year even with Medicare, and more if you'll retire before Medicare eligibility.

What about inflation?

+

Use today's dollars in the worksheet, then plan a slightly higher withdrawal rate to cover inflation (historically ~3%/year). Social Security's cost-of-living adjustments help offset some of it.
